Al-Qasimiyah School serves as the headquarters of Sharjah Architecture Triennial and the main venue for our programs. It houses the Triennial offices, as well as the exhibition galleries, lecture hall, and library, among other spaces. The building also contains several landscaped and covered courtyards.
The Triennial moved into the building in 2018 after it was decommissioned by the Ministry of Education. In an effort to preserve the modern heritage of Sharjah, as well as demonstrate an example of adaptive reuse of an existing building, the Triennial took on the challenge of renovating the abandoned school, transforming it into a vibrant cultural institution that is welcoming and open to the public.
The Triennial was keen to occupy this particular building not only because of its diverse spatial possibilities, but also because it represents a proud period of national investment in education and civic projects across the United Arab Emirates. In fact, Al-Qasimiyah School is based on a building typology that can be seen in many almost identical schools across the country, with more than twenty similar buildings in Sharjah alone.
The building's ubiquitous design, based on a mid-1970s prototype by the regional architectural firm Khatib & Alami, became synonymous with educational facilities. These schools are hard to miss, thanks to their unique features: repetitive flat vaulted bays, perforated screens and covered walkways, modular classroom units alternating with a series of open spaces, and gentle earth tones enlivening concrete surfaces, not to mention the iconic water towers.
